Venture Capital Fund - These a usually large limited partnerships with numerous institutional and high net worth individuals. It is not uncommon for a VC Fund to have a billion dollars or more of capital under management. They also have minimum investment amounts and require lock-up periods of 2 years or more. They are for long term investing.
There are of course smaller funds that make smaller investments of one million dollars or less. The larger funds, however have to make larger investments because of the large amounts of capital they have to manage. They have to make investments of twenty-five million or more otherwise they would just have too many investments to monitor.
Some Venture Capital Funds specialize in certain fields like medical technology, biotechnology or oil and gas exploration. They have a large staff of experienced individuals that conduct extensive due diligence and research on competitors and the industry outlook as a whole before they decide to invest in a particular company.
