Venture Capital is the term used to refer to a number of different types of funding. Generally speaking it refers to funding that a large investment firm makes into either a start-up company or an existing company. Reverse Merger Funding and Leaddog Capital LP help companies with at least $5,000,000 in gross annual revenues with their funding needs. Venture Capital Firms
come in all different sizes. They could have as little as $1,000,000
under management or they could have several billion dollars under
management. One thing that most of them have in common, however, is
that they are usually long term investors. This means that once they
make their investment they may not be looking for an exit strategy at least one year, but more often 2 to 5 years.
Venture
Capital can also refer to funding that a private investor invests into
a company, however, most private investors that invest as individuals
and not as part of a firm, are referred to as Angel Investors. Most funding provided by Angel Investors is relatively small amounts of $50,000 to $250,000.
Some
VC investors have become fairly specialized. They may have
an investment strategy or model that allows them to only invest in a
particular field. Some VC firms may only invest in biotechnology, or
manufacturing or oil and gas.
The due diligence process
a VC firm conducts can be long and painful. They may look
at 20 companies and decide to invest in only one, and that decision may
be made after six months of due diligence.
The best place to start your search for funding is with a solid business plan. A well-prepared and professional business plan is the first starting point. It can take weeks or even months to prepare. Usually several drafts and revisions are required before it is ready to present to potential investors. Click here for some tips on Preparing an Effective Business Plan.
